2017 West Coast MTB Challenge a massive success!

On Saturday 15 April 2017, as the early morning mists rolled over the dunes of Swakopmund, 300 MTB cyclists patiently awaited the final seconds of the countdown that would mark the beginning of one of Namibia's fastest growing MTB races, the 2017 Gravel & Dirt West Coast MTB Challenge.

The sight of so many Namibian riders pulling away, plays testimony to the growing popularity of the MTB lifestyle, a lifestyle that Hollard and Raceday Events is proud to be part of by sponsoring and promoting the growth and development of a sport that has taken off across the world.

Considering the conditions that these riders were faced with, ranging from the sand to the rocky climbs, this was by no means going to be a casual ride in the proverbial park. Many riders fell victim to these perilous conditions throughout the race, but many more pushed through and persevered.

As witnessed in last week's X-Ride, Namibia has delivered some incredible MTB athletes. These riders once again proved why they are called the Elite of the racing community by delivering an adrenaline packed performance from the get go.

It was a nail biting finish to the 75km Elite Men category with mere split seconds determining the podium positions. Xavier Papo crossed the line in first place with a time of 2:44:01:67 with Brandon Plaatjies in second with 2:44:01:86 and in third place Danzel de Koe on 2:44:01:95.

As for the 75km Elite Woman's category, Michelle Vorster came in first with a time of 2:50:03:03, a full 15 minutes ahead of Irene Steyn with a time of 3:05:21:42 and Michelle Doman in third with a time of 3:20:08:09. Congratulations to the winners of the 2017 Gravel & Dirt West Coast MTB Challenge. All results can be viewed here.

On 13 May 2017, Otjiwa Lodge will play host to the third race in this fantastic series. The Otjiwa Eagle Ride offers a 80km MTB course and for the first time now also offers a trail run with a distance of 10.5km as well as 21km. Last year this race proved to be the biggest MTB race in Namibia with a turnout of almost 300 riders and we will surely see many old faces, as well as a score of newcomers at this years event.
